Historical SIS Market for HigherEd Institutions – November 2020 Update

Student Information Systems
HigherEd SIS History - LisTedTECH

In August 2019, we shared our first historical graph of the Student Information Systems market. I am now offering you this updated version of one of the most commented graph since our inception.

Over the past year, we have added more companies and student information systems to our database. I am happy to share that 23 new systems are now part of this graph. We were no longer able to fit all this information on a 2-page graph so we extend it to 4 pages.

When I first shared this graph last year, I wanted to receive your feedback, additions, and other suggestions to make it as geographically inclusive as possible. Thanks to our readers, partners, and clients, we now better represent European and Asian companies. Here is a comparison of the two graphs:

Continent or Subregions

Continent   or Subregions   August   2019   Percentage   of Total for August 2019   November   2020     Percentage   of Total for November 2020
North   America   15   50%   19   36% (-14%)
South   America   0   0%   1   2% (+2%)
Europe   6   20%   17   32% (+12%)
Asia   4   13%   9   17% (+4%)
Africa   2   7%   2   3% (-4%)
Middle   East   2   7%   3   6% (-1%)
Oceania   1   3%   2   4% (+1%)
TOTAL   30   100%   53   100%

For this updated version of the historical SIS market for HigherEd institutions, we have added products as recent as 2017 and as old as 1983. On average, systems added are 17.5 years old. We also included name changes (e.g. Anthology previously known as Campus Management) and have updated product introduction dates.

Like last year, we have not included very small systems (those for which our database includes less than three clients) as well as systems that mostly target K-12 institutions. This image does not show market share, just historical mergers, and acquisitions. The companies are in alphabetical order.

A printable four-page PDF version of this graph is available. Please share among your network!

Who Are HigherEd’s Tech Leaders?

This year, I’ve been revisiting some of the classic business books: Blue Ocean Shift, Free, The Innovator’s Dilemma, Zero to One, and of course, Crossing the Chasm. That last one really got me thinking about early adopters. In tech markets, they’re the people (or in HigherEd, the institutions) who are comfortable taking risks, trying something new, and shaping the market ... Who Are HigherEd’s Tech Leaders?  Read More

Anthology’s Chapter 11 Filing: Breaking Up to Refocus

September 2025 marked a major turning point for Anthology, the owner of Blackboard and several other higher education technology platforms. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. after efforts to sell itself or parts of its business outside of court failed. The filing is not a liquidation. Instead, it is a structured reorganization designed to ... Anthology’s Chapter 11 Filing: Breaking Up to Refocus  Read More

Rethinking Market Saturation in EdTech

Market saturation is a concept we often discuss at ListEdTech because it comes up frequently with our clients. Investors want to know if a market still has room to grow, while startups want to understand whether they are entering a space with opportunities or one that is already crowded. Last year, we explored saturation by ... Rethinking Market Saturation in EdTech  Read More
